Historic barley seed samples and their utility

چکیده
Gene banks around the world hold over 370.000 accessions of barley (van Hintum and Menting, 2003). Although a large number of landraces and obsolete cultivars are stored in genebanks the geographic coverage of this conserved material is far from evenly distributed. For example only a handful of landraces from Northern Europe have been conserved (Jones et al, 2008a). Thus studies of geographic differences in land race barley are hampered by the availability of suitable material.

Farmer’s seed sources and seed quality: 2. seed health
The study assessed the health quality of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) seed samples collected from formal and informal sector in Ethiopia and Syria. In Ethiopia, several seed-borne fungi were found on wheat samples: Cochliobolus sativum, Fusarium avenaceum, F. graminearum, F. nivale, F. poae and Septoria nodorum. C. sativum was predominant with 84% of samples...
متن کاملWheat and barley seed system in Syria: farmers, varietal perceptions, seed sources and seed management
A total of 206 wheat and 200 barley farmers were interviewed in northeastern Syria to understand farmer perceptions and practice relating to modern varieties, seed sources and seed quality. Wheat farmers had better awareness and grew modern varieties (87%), applied fertilizers (99.5%), herbicides (93%), seed treatment (90%) or insecticides (41%). In contrast barley growers had low awareness (36...
متن کاملNineteenth century seeds reveal the population genetics of landrace barley (Hordeum vulgare).
Barley (Hordeum vulgare) is a major crop, grown worldwide and in a wide range of climatic conditions. Despite its importance as a crop species, little is known about the population genetics of barley and the effects of bottlenecks, adaptation, and gene flow on genetic diversity within and between landrace populations. In areas with highly developed agriculture, such as Northern Europe, these ty...
متن کاملPlant exudates may stabilize or weaken soil depending on species, origin and time
We hypothesized that plant exudates could either gel or disperse soil depending on their chemical characteristics. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Optic) and maize (Zea mays L. cv. Freya) root exudates were collected using an aerated hydroponic method and compared with chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seed exudate, a commonly used root exudate analogue. Sandy loam soil was passed through a 500-μm mesh...
متن کاملRapid Detection and Quantification of Rhynchosporium secalis in Barley Using a Polymerase Chain Reaction
PCR primers for diagnosis of Rhynchosporium secalis in seed samples of barley were developed. For the quantification of the pathogen in seed samples a real-time PCR with SYBR Green approach was used. Amounts from 1.8 to 419.1 pg of R. secalis DNA per 100 ng of total DNA were detected in 18 samples of barley seeds contaminated by R. secalis in field conditions. The correctness of this quantitati...
